This has many clear advantages, but there are some disadvantages to consider as well before making your decision.

Buying Amish furniture ensures that you are supporting American industry, as well as local jobs and manufacturing.

• Price. Due to its quality and handmade nature, Amish furniture will be inherently more expensive. This is the opposite of one of those mass-produced sets that you find in every store. The craftsmen and craftswomen have taken years to hone their craft, and the materials are sourced from local forests. That's not to say you don't get what you pay for- Amish furniture represents an incredible value, considering its durability, utility, and simple beauty. However, the price tag is not for everyone.

• Time. We mentioned customizability above as an advantage- but that comes with a cost. If you are in need of a dining set right away, an Amish set will not be the right choice. Because each piece is hand-crafted to order, plan on your order taking several weeks before it arrives in your home. The wait will certainly be worth it- as long as you can afford to wait!

• Weight. If you're the kind of person who likes to re-decorate their home all the time, Amish furniture may not be the right choice. Their use of solid hardwoods such as maple, oak, elm, cherry or walnut means that the pieces will weigh a lot. Unless you enjoy hiring professional movers each time you get the itch to rearrange your room, you might want to consider another type of furniture.
