Why Solid Wood is Unique and Beautiful
by Nick, Digital Specialist | August 28, 2024
Custom solid wood furniture is some of the best furniture money can buy. It represents some of the highest quality of any product on the market, and because each piece is built to order, it can be customized to fit your style and color scheme. Here are some things to know before you make your decision!
How Solid Wood Furniture is Made
Let’s start with the wood- planks of wood are cut from a large log, then pieced together using any one of several different kinds of joinery techniques. (If you’re a woodworking nerd, the most common methods are biscuiting and mortise-and-tenon.) Once the pieces of wood are joined together, they are planed down to make them even, and then sanded smooth. Finally, the piece is ready for stain or paint.

Wood is a Natural Product!
One thing people often forget is that wood is a natural product. As a result, every single piece will be different! Every plank and every piece of furniture will have its own special and unique look to it. They’re like snowflakes- no two are exactly alike! This means that the piece you get in your home will have its own unique markings, graining, and other features.

Here’s What it Also Means!
This also means that your piece probably won’t look like the piece you saw on the sales floor- and it’s unlikely to be an exact match to the finish samples they show. These are simply representations of the piece- the one you’ll get won’t be identical. Keep this in mind when you’re ordering- some variation is to be expected. This can include in the actual color of the finish itself- factors like the type of wood and the moisture level in the particular piece of wood can affect how the color ultimately shows on the wood.
These two table tops have the same finish! Different wood types means that the color shows a little differently. Notice the different grain patterns, too!
Is Custom Solid Wood Furniture Right For Me?
If you are excited about the variations and uniqueness that a custom solid wood piece can provide, then yes! A custom solid wood piece is the perfect choice for you. How exciting to see what this beautiful, unique piece will look like in your home for years to come. If you like solid wood but are leery of the variation, consider a darker finish. Darker finishes will tend to “hide” some of the uniqueness but you’d still be able to get something gorgeous and high-quality. If you prefer a less “unique” look, consider a table with veneered tops. These won’t have the same uniqueness as solid wood and are designed to be more consistent in regards to the color and graining. Also, if you happen to love the way a store has it on display, ask if you can buy it right off the floor.
